Short Film: Unspoken: We don't talk about it

Welcome: I Am Alice

A 5-minute short film called Unspoken: We don't talk about it.

I share my personal story, published in my memoir, I AM Alice: Break Up, Breakdown, Breakthrough,  A True Adventure Story.

When I found myself sectioned in an NHS hospital back in 2014, due to a sudden divorce and loss of my adopted children, I was meant to meet the next day. My life started to fall apart; it wasn't instant, but the result of being told by my husband he no longer wanted the children or me, after a gruelling 2-year process to jump all the hoops to become an adopter. If anyone has been through the adoption process, you know it's a rigorous procedure.

Why make a Short Film?

I discovered before putting out my book that my story is by no means unique. This happened to many women and men, not just now but through the centuries.  I feel the dangers of these places need to be highlighted, including some members of staff.

What happened to me inside?

There is a lot of shame around what goes on in there - Physical and emotional abuse from other inmates. I witnessed a woman being strangled. I was verbally abused myself, and after seeing the strangulation, I was scared for my personal safety.

One evening, when the head psych had suddenly decided, I was immediately allowed off my section. I was scared of a fellow patient who was screaming abuse at everyone. I ventured to the canteen; this is where I was introduced to a man who was to groom and defraud me for the next six months.  You can discover more of my story in my book.
